When Chevrolet launched the Trax for 2015, the mini-compact crossover category was just beginning to catch hold. No one knew whether customers would fall for something like a Trax, which is twenty inches shorter than Chevrolet`s conventionally compact Equinox. So far, at least, buyers seem ready for smaller vehicles with a tall bod and versatile interior. In addition to an efficient powertrain and tempting price, Trax comes across as a sensible choice for the daily commute and family chores.
Except for some fresh color choices, nothing has switched.
Based on the Chevrolet Sonic platform and kin to Buick`s Encore, the Trax places thrift above spirited spectacle. Considering its bantam-sized figure dimensions, the Trax interior is more spacious than expected. Specifically, there`s Eighteen.8 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats. With the back seat folded, volume expands to 48.Four cubic feet. The front passenger seat folds down, to carry objects up to eight feet long while still being able to close the tailgate.
The turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine develops one hundred thirty eight horsepower, mating with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available in each trim level. Fuel economy is a strong point, estimated at twenty six mpg in city driving and thirty four mpg on the highway (29 mpg in combined driving). All-wheel drive drops the estimate to 24/31 mpg (27 combined).
Three trim levels are suggested: LS, LT, and LTZ.
Tooled remarkably well, the basic Trax comes with ten airbags, a rearview camera, air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power mirrors, power locks and windows, daytime running lamps, a compass, and cloth upholstery. Six-speaker sound mates with a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment interface, including a seven-inch color touchscreen, USB and aux ports, Bluetooth streaming audio, and Siri Eyes Free. The latest rendition of GM`s OnStar features 4G LTE connectivity, with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. Steel 16-inch wheels have plastic covers.
The midlevel Trax adds cruise control, roof rails, heated power mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, remote embark, a 110-volt outlet, under-seat storage drawer, and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels.
An available LT Convenience Package includes upgraded leatherette and cloth seat trim, a power driver`s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and rear parking sensors. The LT Sun and Sound package adds a sunroof and a seven-speaker Bose sound system.
Most items that are optional for the LT are standard in the LTZ. Each LTZ model includes utter leatherette seat trim, with heated front seats and a power driver`s seat. Also standard are rear park assist, an auto-dimming inwards mirror, foglamps, extra chrome assets trim, Bose seven-speaker sound, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
This fresh breed of subcompact offers a refined combination of fuel economy, utility, and rail quality, at a sensible price. We applaud the inclusion of a rearview camera even on the base LS model, as well as a standard MyLink system. Still, lack of basic features like cruise control makes the LS less tempting. Best overall value, then, is the midlevel LT. Adding all-wheel drive costs only about $1,500 extra, and it`s a sensible feature even for owners who don`t live in the snowbelt.
