Benefit car showcase Saturday brings vintage automobiles, food, joy downtown
A one thousand nine hundred seventy four Challenger muscle car will be the special attraction at the annual Current Sea Cruisers benefit car demonstrate Saturday in downtown Salem.
The car was featured on the TV display “Search & Restore.” The car has been restored to original beauty, five hundred twenty five Hemi.
The Dent County Courthouse square will be surrounded by vintage automobiles all day Saturday.
The benefit car display will raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and Project Win Cancer Support.
The Current Sea Cruisers Car Club has been around for decades, but officially organized in about 1976, according to longtime member and current club president Carl Smith.
Smith said in the early days of the club, car shows also were held at the Salem City Park, the Salem High School parking lot and other locations in the community.
The club also hosts monthly cruise-ins beginning the very first Saturday of each month on the Grace Community Church parking lot.
Smith said the annual car showcase is a joy day for all automobile enthusiasts to get together and visit and reminisce about their equipments and put them on display for everyone to love.
Several vendors will be set up around the courthouse square and in the downtown area.
“If the weather cooperates, there could be as many as one hundred vehicles at the annual showcase,” Smith said. “Weather has a lot to do with turnout, but it’s usually a massive showcase with spectacular vintage vehicles from all over.”
The local club has about twenty five active members, but members only display their vehicles at the annual demonstrate and are not entered for judging. Judging is done by vehicle enthusiasts and is calculated on the 100-points system.
“Club member’s vehicles are displayed on the west side of Hwy. Nineteen and not included in the judging to keep it fair and impartial,” Smith said. “Entries for judging will be displayed on other streets surrounding the courthouse square.”
Vehicle owners will be working feverishly to get their vintage automobiles in top demonstrate appearance.
During the annual car display, one thousand nine hundred eighty six to one thousand nine hundred ninety nine vehicles will be judged separately and will be awarded three trophies. They will not be eligible for the Best of Demonstrate Award.
The day starts at eight a.m. and judging starts at noon. There is a registration fee and it includes a goody dash plaque and T-shirt to the very first fifty entries.
The event also includes games, lots of food and joy for all ages. The club will have hamburgers, hotdogs and pork steaks and trimmings available as part of the fundraising effort.
The showcase has raised more than $Four,500 for the club’s charities in past years.
