MARIPOSA, Calif. (FOX26 News) – A Texas man is now in custody, accused of almost running over three law enforcement officers during a high-speed pursue through Mariposa County.
California Highway Patrol officers attempted to pull over the driver around Trio:30 p.m. along Highway forty nine near the Mariposa/Madera County Line, after receiving reports of a driver who wasn’t staying in one lane.
They say he was driving at a “high rate of speed, enormously erratic and dangerous.”
At some point, officers lost view of the man’s yellow Dodge truck.
Mariposa County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull over the driver, identified as 28-year-old Victor Moon, using what’s called a “Stop-Stick” maneuver.
He avoided this and sped away on side roads, evading officers for more than thirty minutes.
Some of the ordeal was caught on a CHP dashcam.
A Mariposa County Sheriff’s Sergeant even fired twice at the rear tire of the truck.
Even so, the driver sped off.
The driver ultimately stopped just north of the Mariposa Airport and attempted to run from deputies, according to the Sheriff’s office.
However, deputies say they were able to arrest the man right away.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s office says one of its sergeants “forcibly stopped” the man.
The California Highway Patrol and the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation of this incident.
It’s not clear what led Moon to drive so riskily or why he was in the area.
“I am very pleased with the response and restraint shown by the deputies and CHP during this incident. The maneuver done by our Sergeant to stop the vehicle, undoubtedly saved the lives of virginal people driving along Highway forty nine North”- Sheriff Doug Binnewies.
Moon is now at the Mariposa County Adult Detention Facility on charges of:
- 245(A)(1) PC- Felony- Onslaught with a Deadly Weapon
- 245(C)PC – Felony- Attack With a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer
- 2800.Two(A) VC- Felony- Reckless evading a Law Enforcement Officer
- 11550(A) HS- Misdemeanor- Under the Influence of a Managed Substance
- 23103(A)VC- Misdemeanor- Reckless Driving
His bail amount is presently set at $100,000.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Sergeant who fired shots will be placed on paid administrative leave.
This is standard procedure and protocol in all Officer Involved Shooting incidents.
