BMW adds standard Remote Parking and Ambient Air functions for two thousand seventeen update to its flagship sedan.
From October onwards all fresh BMW seven series models – with the exception of the recently introduced 740e – will come tooled with the Remote Parking feature, at no extra cost.
The Remote Parking feature enables owners to remotely control their car to inject and exit limited spaces without needing anyone to be at its controls. The car is managed through the BMW Display Key with its integrated touchscreen, where the key holder simply needs to press the forward or switch roles directional arrows to guide the car in or out of a parking spot.
Remote Parking was one of the main highlights of BMW’s fresh seven Series box of tricks, but one that has been absent from the Australian market up till now. Touted as a first-of-its-kind feature for a series production car, the feature wasn’t made available originally due to Australian legislation which required a driver behind the wheel at all times when the vehicle is being operated.
Legislation has been recently amended to permit for the operation of the Remote Parking in all states, with the exception of Western Australia. As such BMW Australia recommends that the feature not be used in WA. According to Adam Davis, product communications manager of BMW Australia, BMW will proceed to work with local governments on legislations and infrastructure to permit the further implementation of the latest automotive technology.
That being said, seven Series models sold in Western Australia will still come fitted with the Remote Parking feature.
Unluckily the Remote Parking feature isn’t available for the 740e iPerformance as the system is yet to be developed for BMW’s hybrid drivetrains.
BMW further states that the feature also requires both a hardware and software update on the seven Series in order to function, and as such cannot be retrofitted to existing models sold since the current generation arrived in December 2015.
Aside from Remote Parking, the optional Ambient Air package has been made as standard fitment across the seven Series’ range. The Ambient Air package permits drivers to dispense specially ready scents across the cabin via the car’s climate control system. There are eight scents available across four ‘suite’ combinations to suit the occupants’ taste.
Even with the updated features, list pricing for the seven Series range has remained unchanged.
