Autocar Attempts Out Carroll Shelby’s $100 Game With A Bunch Of Cars
A long, long time ago, someone by the name of Carroll Shelby, said that the Cobra four hundred twenty seven built by his rock-hard is so quick on launch from a standstill that it’s unlikely to grab a $100 bill taped to the car’s dash. Well, Autocar determined to see if there is some truth in that claim.
So the car magazine got together a bunch of cars and a took them all to a track for a duo of hours of joy. And they did manage to bring in a remarkable range of machines for the party game.
A Renault Zoe, a Ford Fiesta ST, Bentley Bentayga Diesel, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Aston Martin DB11 arrived at the Silverstone race track with Autocar’s Matt Prior and Dan Prosser leaping in to play the game.
Matt had the less interesting part of play as he was the one who had to grab the bill from the dash, while Dan got away with all the joy as he got to drive these cars.
The rules of the game were ordinary and closely adhered to Carroll Shelby’s iconic statement. If you can take the money off the dash under utter acceleration, you get to keep the cash. Which means that if the car is cruelly quick, then it’s going to be one strenuous job to lean forward and grab the cash. Dan split it up into $20 bills and spread the exercise across five cars.

Is it just me or has Bentley Bentayga commenced looking good all of a unexpected? It certainly looks magnificent in the Autocar movie.
While the Renault Zoe, Ford Fiesta ST and the Bentley Bentayga runs turned out to be uneventful and devoid of any fresh insights, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio sprint threw up a fact. The Alfa is a quicker and quicker than the four hundred twenty seven Cobra. So if the passenger took the cash off the dash in this car, then that makes Carroll Shelby a terrible liar. And perhaps that’s the verdict as Matt was able to grab the bill here. However, the hosts did accept that on a sexier day with super-sticky tires, the Giulia Quadrifoglio would have made it a lot more difficult to win the game.
Then came the Aston Martin DB11 and this one looked all set to strike the players in the game. That’s exactly what it did. The six hundred hp British sports car, roared and growled as it launched off the mark, leaving Matt fighting to reach out for the dollar bill. Eventually, the speedometer needle went past the sixty mph barrier and the $20 bill was still there on the dash. We’ve a winner.
